About us
Welcome to SJ Badminton Upper Hutt, your social badminton club in Upper Hutt, New Zealand!
Our club nights operate every Wednesday evening (including during school holidays) from 7pm - 9pm catering for players of all skill levels over the age of 16yrs old to enjoy the sport.
We use specialised compter software to automate the game draws each night which operate as doubles games to maximise court times accross 4 courts. Players will be given a grading so games are generated according to grades and rotated between courts.
We shut down from mid December through to mid January and public holidays. Occasionally the College requires the use of the gym for school events therefore our club night may be cancelled on that basis.
Our Passion
We are a Non-Profit club run by a committee of volunteers with a passion for badminton and a commitment to fostering a vibrant all inclusive social badminton community for everyone in the Upper Hutt area.
Whether you have never played before but want to give it a go, or you are an experienced player wanting to have some fun come along and give us a go!
Our history
Our club began around 1966 and first operated out of St John's Church Hall which is what the 'SJ' in our club name stands for to reflect that heritage. As our club grew over the years we then moved venue to the original Upper Hutt College school gymnasium which could accommodate three courts of play. These days we operate from the 'New' Upper Hutt College gymnasium which can accommodate 4 courts of play.

How club nights run
On arrival please report to one of our committee members where your name will be recorded for the game draws and you can make your payment for the night either by cash or internet banking transfer to our club account.
It is encouraged to bring your own racket however the club does have a limited number of loan rackets available on a first come first served basis.
We ask that when you arrive please offer to help getting the courts setup so we can all get underway on time. Once the courts are setup you are welcome to jump on with others and start warming up. At the end of the night please help pack up before leaving as many hands make light work.
Games will typically always be Doubles (4 players to a court) to maximise as much game time for players as possible. Games typically will last for 9m rounds. Players are automatically assigned to courts using our club computer software which automates the draws per game.
We generally play with nylon shuttles however you are welcome to bring along your own feather shuttles to be used if preferred.
If you leave before the end of the night please let a committe member know so you can be taken out of the draw before the next round of play.
Please respect the committe volunteers and all other players at all times - any form of verbal or physical abuse will not be tolerated. We ask that you respect the game caller and listen to the games being called as it can be hard to hear over others talking
